2008-04(Apr)-19 Sat Concept A (Frank Desilver)
We take it for granted, that what came to past - came to past. That the past is fixed in solid rock. What if the past is flexible? Concept A is a concept about a flexible Past - Present - Future. It's a concept that may be the bedrock of "Free Will"

2008-03(Mar)-01 Sat What is metaphysics? (Matthew Hammerton)
Metaphysics is often viewed as one of the most important and fundamental branches of philosophy. In fact, one of the terms Aristotle used to describe this branch of philosophy was "first philosophy". But what is metaphysics? In this talk I will survey several candidate answers to this question and assess their viability. Ultimately I will suggest that no answer proves entirely satisfactory. Nevertheless, asking this question and examining potential answers can help us form a general view of the nature and scope of metaphysics.

2008-02(Feb)-16 Sat Yoga Nidra (Jacqueline Antonios)
Yoga Nidra, which is derived from the Tantras, is a profound technique in which you learn to relax consciously. This systematic method based on scientific principles induces complete mental, emotional and physical relaxation required for health, mental peace and higher awareness. In this session you will be guided through this practice. Please wear comfortable, loose clothing. Yoga Nidra should be practiced on an empty stomach. Allow at least three hours for digestion of a heavy meal and half an hour for the settling of light refreshments. Please also, bring along, a mat, towel or blanket to lay on (you really want to seperate yourself from the Humanist House floor). The doors will be locked at 9:35 until the end of the 25 minute yoga session (Anyone inside may leave at any time). The usual Philorum circle discussion format will follow.

2007-11(Nov)-03 Sat Love is imprudent and immoral (John Bentley.)
The necessary conditions of the orthodox idea of Romantic/Sexual love are: admiration for the other; expression of that admiration; sexual attraction to the other; and the previous three conditions reciprocated. If that is right then (romantic/sexual) love is imprudent (against self interest) and immoral (against the interest of the other). This thesis depends on the conclusions in "Is there anything wrong with a big ego?" http://www.philorum.org/speech/20040616JohnBentley.html.

2007-09(Sep)-01 Sat Morals without God - a Secular system of Ethics (Ian Bryce)
Can we have morals without a god? This talk explores the possibility of a system of ethics based on scientific principles and philosophy. The foundations claimed by religions are examined and found lacking. Instead, evidence from neuroscience illuminated the nature of sentience in humans and animals, including its limitations in space and time, and its dependence on life for support. This leads to our core paradigm "respect for sentient beings". The utilitarian principle is used to make qualitative and quantitative comparisons of the consequences of possible courses of action. The analysis is flowed down to provide enlightened policies on personal freedoms, abortion, euthanasia, justice, education and the environment.
